The original design premise for La Bestia included enough head height in the boot to fit an electric bike with the front wheel and seat removed. I have inverter power available for charging if required. Necessarily this set the bed height frame at 80cm clearance, a key design criterion.
An important reason I carry a bike is so that I have notional transport other than ‘Shanks Pony” when parked up. It is a limitation of travelling via campervan when compared to a towed caravan or camper trailer. To a certain extent it changes the order that you visit the local points of interest. Longer distance POIs (>10km) are scheduled before setting up camp. Once I set up camp I use my bike to get around and do nearby POIs plus supermarket, hardware and pub resupply runs.
The electric bike hasn’t eventuated yet as I’m still physically capable and keen to do it without assistance so I generally carry an old clunker Giant 26” MTB with me. Up until very recently it was carried in the boot as intended but whilst this is great for cleanliness and security the bike is the first thing I had to remove to get to most of my other gear. With the addition of the rear door racks I have developed a bespoke carry frame.
I have a fold-up rear rack for the bike that carries a carton or a collapsible crate for groceries etc. My backpacks come in handy as well. It’s also a good way to get some exercise after sitting during the driving stints. The MTB is also used for conducting reconnaissance runs along bush tracks & 4WD trails prior to deciding whether to tackle them with La Bestia.
